In a world where times have evolved, Shropshire's absence of a direct train connection to London stands out. The county's last direct link was severed in 2024 when Avanti West Coast discontinued its daily service, citing low passenger numbers. But here's where it gets controversial: with the rise of public transport and a renewed focus on rail infrastructure, is it time to reconsider?
Enter Julia Buckley, the MP for Shrewsbury, who believes in the power of public transport and the potential of Shropshire. She, along with a group of advocates, made a compelling case for a new direct service between London and Wrexham, presenting a petition at Downing Street. Buckley highlights the post-pandemic bounce-back of public transport users and the demand from businesses for more trains to the capital.
And this is the part most people miss: the "Hollywood factor". With Wrexham's football club now owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, there's a new buzz around the town, and Buckley believes it could spark interest in the rail bid.
The Wrexham, Shropshire and Midlands Railway (WSMR), led by Alstom, submitted a bid last year to provide daily trains. An initial proposal for five daily services was rejected due to congestion concerns, but WSMR's new application offers a refined plan. They've reduced the services to three daily trains, with the potential for a fourth, and included an additional stop at Wellington, Shropshire.
Darren Horley, WSMR's Mobilisation Director, emphasizes their goal: "linking towns and cities which aren't currently connected." Previous services faced criticism for their travel time, but Horley assures that the new service will be quicker, approximately four hours from Wrexham to London.
Carl Jones, a director of Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, highlights the county's unique position as the only one in England without a direct rail link to London. This, he argues, could hinder business growth and the county's appeal to potential companies. Nick Millington, Network Rail's Route Director for Wales and Borders, supports this view, citing the area's growth and the Welsh Assembly's backing.
Buckley feels the momentum is building, with support for infrastructure improvements, including Shrewsbury station. She envisions a redesigned station as part of a 10-year plan, with a two-storey car park, a vibrant front plaza, and enhanced bus links. "The station's front should be a lively plaza, not a car park," she says, "a place to relax and enjoy a panini and cappuccino."
There's also a proposal for a new parkway station east of Shrewsbury, a project Ian Baxter from SLC is passionate about. While a site is yet to be confirmed, Baxter assures easy access to the county town's roads. With SLC's experience in developing parkway stations like Warwick and Worcester, Baxter estimates a timeline of four to six years.
