Major news in the college football world! Wide receiver Johntay Cook, formerly of Syracuse, has made a significant move, committing to Ole Miss via the NCAA Transfer Portal. This is a game-changer for both the player and the Rebels. Cook brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Ole Miss roster, making him a key player to watch. But how did he get here? Let's dive in.
Cook, who has one season of eligibility remaining, initially transferred to Syracuse for the 2025 season. Before his time with the Orange, he spent two seasons at Texas. During his single season at Syracuse, Cook made 12 appearances, racking up 45 catches for 549 yards and two touchdowns.
Before his time with the Orange, Cook spent two seasons at Texas, where he played in 18 games, accumulating 32 catches for 273 yards and two touchdowns.
Cook's journey to this point is quite impressive. Coming out of high school at DeSoto (TX), he was a five-star prospect. He was ranked as the No. 31 overall player and the No. 3 wide receiver in the 2023 recruiting cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings.
This commitment marks the 21st player to join Ole Miss this offseason through the NCAA Transfer Portal. At the time of his commitment, Cook was ranked as the No. 63 wide receiver in On3’s 2026 Transfer Portal Player Rankings.
Here’s where it gets interesting: Ole Miss is entering a new era under head coach Pete Golding, who is in his first full year at the helm. Golding stepped in to coach the Rebels in the College Football Playoff after Lane Kiffin departed to take over at LSU. Under Golding's leadership, Ole Miss had a successful run in the CFP, defeating Tulane and Georgia. Although they fell to Miami in the semifinals, the team’s performance was a promising sign for the program's future.
Golding expressed his enthusiasm, stating that the fans deserve these opportunities and the expectation is to have them consistently.
And this is the part most people miss... Johntay Cook isn't the only former Syracuse wide receiver joining Ole Miss. Darrell Gill, another transfer from Syracuse, has also committed. In the 2025 season, Gill recorded 32 catches for 506 yards and a career-high five touchdowns. This could mean a significant boost for the Rebels' offensive capabilities.
