Climate change is a ticking time bomb for the Isle of Man, threatening its very way of life. But how exactly is this global phenomenon impacting this small island?
Extreme weather patterns are becoming the new normal, according to local meteorologist Gary Salisbury. The island's unique geography, with all travel dependent on sea and air, makes it especially vulnerable to these changes.
The 2025 weather report reveals a startling trend: the warmest spring and summer since 1947, a bone-dry March, and one of the wettest autumns in three decades. These fluctuations have had devastating effects on the island's agriculture and fisheries.
For instance, the dry spring in 2024 severely impacted crop farmers and livestock. 'No rain, no growth,' as Salisbury puts it. The island's cows, being grass-fed, suffered as the grass struggled to grow in the parched earth.
The dry conditions also affected the fisheries, with river levels dropping. This was followed by a stark contrast in 2025, when the island experienced a 'very wet' spring, highlighting the unpredictable nature of climate change.
The summer of 2025 was exceptionally warm, with daily temperatures reaching 16°C (61°F) and a scorching 26.7°C (80°F) on July 12th. All of the top 10 warmest years have occurred since 2000, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
But the story doesn't end there. The autumn months brought a deluge, with rainfall 10% higher than the traditional wettest time of the year. This increased risk of flooding is a cause for concern, as is the potential for rising sea levels and tidal surges, which have already caused significant damage in the past.
The Isle of Man is on the front lines of climate change, and the future looks uncertain. Are these events a sign of things to come, or just a roll of the dice? The island's decision-makers must not dismiss these issues, as the impact is already being felt.
The climate crisis is here, and it's time to act. But what do you think? Is the Isle of Man prepared for the challenges ahead, or is it, as Salisbury suggests, rolling the dice with its future?
