In a powerful tribute to the rich history of Black baseball, both Kansas City and Seattle are stepping up to honor the Negro Leagues during Black History Month with meaningful initiatives.
The Seattle Mariners are set to pay homage to the 1946 Seattle Steelheads by donning replica uniforms every Sunday starting in the 2026 season. This exciting move marks a significant moment as the Mariners will become the first Major League Baseball team to regularly wear a Negro Leagues uniform in their lineup.
Meanwhile, the Kansas City Royals are making waves by ensuring free entry to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) throughout February. This program, now in its fifth consecutive year, is spearheaded by the Royals Foundation and aims to promote Black History Month while increasing community engagement with the museum's important narratives. The NLBM, which opened its doors in 1990, is the only museum in the United States dedicated solely to showcasing the history of African-American baseball and its substantial impact on American culture. Nestled in the historic 18th and Vine Jazz District of Kansas City, the museum is just a short distance from the Paseo YMCA, the birthplace of the Negro National League established by Andrew "Rube" Foster back in 1920.
Bob Kendrick, the president of the NLBM, expressed gratitude towards the Kansas City Royals and their foundation for their continued support, emphasizing how this initiative enhances accessibility, particularly for students from underprivileged backgrounds. "We are eager to see the turnstiles spinning," Kendrick stated, highlighting the importance of educating visitors about the athletes who triumphed over significant social challenges to pursue their passion for the game.
Since this initiative began in 2022, the Royals have reported that over 50,000 individuals have taken advantage of Free February, with the foundation's total contributions surpassing $435,000.
John Sherman, the chairman and CEO of the Royals, described this effort as a natural extension of the organization’s mission. "This institution tells an essential story that deserves to be shared widely," he remarked, noting that the Royals’ ongoing investments in the local community and support for the museum's growth align perfectly with driving attendance.
To accommodate the anticipated influx of visitors, the museum plans to extend its hours during February, ensuring daily access with earlier openings on weekends.
On the West Coast, the Mariners are not only embracing their past but also investing in the future of their community. They are launching the Steelheads Community Fund, pledging $500,000 to back Black-led baseball and softball programs, along with other related community initiatives.
Kevin Martinez, the Mariners’ president of business operations, expressed pride in honoring baseball's history while simultaneously advancing community well-being. "With Steelheads Sundays at T-Mobile Park, we will celebrate the legacy of the Steelheads while fostering greater access to baseball and softball for underserved communities in our area," Martinez explained.
